Local Government Must Make Citizens’ Lives Easier: Purna Basnet

Kathmandu – Purna Basnet, Head of the Publicity Department of the Janata Samajwadi Party (JSPN), has urged the Kathmandu Metropolitan City to stop practices that instill fear among citizens. He criticized the city for targeting locals and the poor without providing alternative solutions, calling for an immediate end to such injustices.
Basnet stated, “The Kathmandu Metropolitan City has become a local government that deprives citizens of their basic needs. Urban aesthetics can never be more important than people’s lives. The role and duty of local government is not to harass the poor and marginalized.”
He expressed concern over repeated incidents in the capital where the most vulnerable groups face harassment from the state.
Highlighting issues such as bulldozing squatter settlements and cracking down on street vendors and small businesses, Basnet emphasized that local authorities should focus on making citizens’ lives simpler and more convenient.
