From Student Leader to Federal Lawmaker: The Inspiring Political Trajectory of Sunita Baral
Sunita Baral’s political career began in Gauradaha, Jhapa district. she received her primary education at Janata Secondary School in Gauradaha.
Remaining active in various activities throughout her school years, she participated as a student representative and completed her Grade 11 and 12 studies at Gauradaha Multipurpose Campus. It was during this period that she became affiliated with the campus committee of the All Nepal National Free Students Union (ANNFSU), marking her entry into organized student politics.
Through her continuous involvement in student politics, Baral was eventually elected as the central chairperson of the ANNFSU. In that role, she fulfilled the significant responsibility of successfully conducting the national convention, which had been stalled for a long time, and facilitating the transfer of leadership.
In recognition of her leadership abilities, she was elected as a central committee member of the CPN (UML) during its tenth national convention and successfully completed one term in that position.
Based on the party's trust, Baral secured the opportunity to become a federal Member of Parliament through the proportional representation system. Beyond her role as a lawmaker, she also served as a whip for the CPN (UML) parliamentary party.
Academically, she completed her bachelor’s degree at Purbanchal University in Biratnagar. She is recognized as the first female leader to reach the central leadership of the ANNFSU from an educational background outside of Tribhuvan University.
Viewing politics as a service rather than a profession, Baral faced numerous challenges to establish herself as a leader. Despite having no family background in politics, the trust and support of her parents inspired her to move forward consistently.
Today, Sunita Baral stands as a powerful, committed leader of the CPN (UML) with a clear vision for the future, prioritizing intergenerational coordination, increased youth participation in politics, and the reform of the education sector.
