Policy and Leadership Reforms Essential for a Prosperous Nepal: Kulman Ghising

Spain. Former Managing Director of the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), Kulman Ghising, has emphasized that broad reforms in policy and leadership are essential to build a prosperous Nepal.

Speaking at an interaction program jointly organized by the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) Costablanca and the Nepal Society Association Costablanca in Spain, Ghising stressed the need for the right political leadership to ensure Nepal’s transformation.

“To achieve rapid economic change and encourage Nepalis abroad to return home, we must bring sweeping reforms in policy and leadership. Light alone in households is not enough; every sector of the country must be illuminated. That is why we launched the ‘Bright Nepal Campaign,’” Ghising remarked.

He highlighted that during his tenure, electricity generation in Nepal increased fivefold—from 800 MW to nearly 4,000 MW—while annual revenue rose to Rs 25 billion. He credited public support for making the NEA financially strong.

During his Europe tour, Ghising discussed with diaspora communities about how Nepal can achieve prosperity, improve its investment climate, and utilize the expertise of the nearly 5 million Nepalis living abroad. “The skills and experiences gained overseas must be channeled into Nepal’s development and transformation,” he said.

Ghising also underlined the urgency of implementing Non-Resident Nepali (NRN) citizenship at the earliest.

The event was chaired by Keshar Bahadur Thapa, President of the Nepal Society Association Costablanca, who expressed pride in hearing from a figure like Ghising, known for his national service. NRNA Costablanca President Bipin Kumar B.C. and other dignitaries also shared their remarks.

On the occasion, Ghising was honored with a letter of appreciation. Artist Saroj Lamichhane entertained the audience with a musical performance, while several organizations sent messages wishing success for the program.
