Massive KitKat Heist: Over 400,000 Chocolate Bars Stolen in Europe

Thieves in Europe have stolen more than 400,000 KitKat chocolates weighing 12 tons from a truck. KitKat announced in a statement that these chocolates, produced by the Swiss company Nestlé, were stolen while being transported from a factory in central Italy toward Poland.

The statement said, "The vehicle and its contents have not yet been recovered, and an investigation is ongoing in close coordination with local authorities and supply chain partners." According to the company, a total of 413,793 KitKat bars were stolen. Each bar can be traced using the batch number on the packet, and KitKat has requested anyone who finds such numbers to inform the company.

The statement also cited a joint report from the International Union of Marine Insurance and the Transported Asset Protection Association EMEA, which concluded that cargo theft and shipping fraud are increasing and becoming more sophisticated.

A company spokesperson joked in the statement, "We have always encouraged people to have a break with KitKat, but it seems thieves took this message too seriously and took a break with over 12 tons of our chocolate." The spokesperson further clarified that while they appreciate the criminals' excellent taste, cargo theft is a growing problem for businesses of all sizes. In a statement posted on Instagram on Sunday, KitKat added that there are no concerns for consumer safety and there will be no impact on supply.

This is not the only major chocolate theft in Europe recently; in July 2023, a British man was sentenced to 18 months in prison for stealing 200,000 chocolate eggs. PA Media news agency reported at the time that Joby Pool broke into an industrial unit and stole thousands of dollars worth of Cadbury Creme Eggs using a stolen truck. Those milk chocolate eggs, filled with a yellow and white fondant 'yolk,' have a large fan base in the UK and are mostly sold during the Easter season.
