Madhesh Drinking Water Crisis Requires Collective Responsibility: Minister Pradeep Yadav

Thori (Parsa), July 25 – Minister for Drinking Water, Pradeep Yadav, emphasized the need for shared responsibility and cooperation from all sectors to resolve the growing drinking water crisis in eight districts of Madhesh Province.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Nirmal Basti Drinking Water Project in Thori Rural Municipality-4, Minister Yadav said that the Tarai-Madhesh region is facing one of the most severe water shortages in its history.
“The situation is beyond sympathy now – what we need is collective responsibility,” said Minister Yadav. “This crisis is not just a problem for Madhesh Province, but a shared challenge for all. It’s time to come together and find a sustainable solution.”
Minister Yadav also highlighted the efforts of his ministry, stating that the government is working around the clock to ensure the constitutional right to safe and clean drinking water, even during these critical times.
“We are committed to guaranteeing safe drinking water for citizens despite the ongoing crisis. I assure the people that this problem will be addressed soon,” he added.
He further informed that, under his leadership, the Ministry of Drinking Water successfully initiated a proposal that led the Government of Nepal's Cabinet to declare eight districts of Madhesh Province as disaster-affected areas for three months.
“This is not the time for emotional gestures. It's time to act with unity and accountability,” he said, urging donor agencies, civil society organizations, and stakeholders to extend necessary support.
Highlighting the significance of the Nirmal Basti Drinking Water Project, Minister Yadav stated that it reflects the government’s strategic and sustainable commitment to resolving long-term water issues in Thori.
“This project isn’t just about building infrastructure like pipelines, pump houses, or tanks,” he said. “It’s about delivering a reliable, safe, and consistent water supply to the people.”
According to Engineer Ram Kumar Shrestha, Director General of the Department of Water Supply and Sewerage Management, the project is expected to directly benefit at least 2,165 local residents.
The project comprises key infrastructure including an overhead tank, deep tube well, office building, pump house, and a water treatment plant, all designed to ensure safe and clean water distribution in the area.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Thori Rural Municipality Chairperson Lal Bahadur Shrestha, Vice-Chairperson Gokuli Kumari Regmi, Parsa District Land Commission Chairperson Tabrej Ahmad, Project Chief Bipul Kumar Lal Das, local contractors, and other dignitaries.
