Landslide in Nepali Congress: General Secretaries Gagan and Bishwprakash Penalized
Nepali Congress’ General Secretaries Gagan Kumar Thapa and Bishwprakash Sharma have been penalized by the party’s establishment faction.
The action was taken against them for calling a special general convention contrary to the party’s decision. The general secretaries had called for the special convention, arguing that it was being ignored despite the fact that 54% of the convention delegates had demanded it.
However, the central committee meeting, which they attended, had agreed that the regular general convention, if not possible in Poush, would be held in Baisakh. Thapa and Sharma had expressed dissent against this decision.
The general secretaries, who called for the special convention, formed an election committee and proceeded with the electoral process, stating that the decisions made in the closed session hall would be final. Various party leaders held discussions in multiple phases to prevent a party split. On Tuesday, leaders held talks in three phases.
Earlier this morning, the general secretaries had also met with party president Sher Bahadur Deuba for discussions. However, this meeting also failed to reach a resolution.
Following this, the faction supporting the general secretaries instructed the election committee to proceed with the disciplinary action. Accordingly, Gagan Thapa’s name has been registered for the post of party president.
