Koshi Barrage Water Flow Reaches 190,000 Cusecs; 24 Gates Opened, Authorities Urge Caution

Inaruwa: Continuous rainfall in the eastern hilly and Terai districts has led to an increase in the water flow through the Koshi Barrage on the Koshi River.

According to Hom Oli, Assistant Information Officer at the District Police Office, Sunsari, the water flow recorded on Friday morning at 9:15 AM reached 190,680 cusecs per second.

As the water level rose, 24 out of the total 56 gates—comprising 52 main barrage gates and 4 canal gates—have been opened, he informed.

With the increased water flow, a red signal light has been switched on and a red flag has been hoisted at the Koshi Barrage as a warning of danger, according to the Koshi Barrage Control Room.

The control room stated that the water level is being continuously monitored, with expectations that the flow may rise further.

In view of the rising water levels, Chief District Officer of Sunsari, Ishwari Prasad Aryal, mentioned that the District Administration Office, Sunsari, has urged residents in coastal areas and vulnerable settlements near the Koshi River to adopt high alertness.

According to a special weather bulletin issued by the Nepal Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, rainfall accompanied by thunder, lightning, and strong winds is expected in parts of Koshi Province through Sunday, Ashwin 11 (September 27).
