Jhala Nath Khanal Calls for Socialist Transformation in New Year 2083 Message

Kathmandu – Former Prime Minister and senior leader of Nepal’s communist movement, Jhala Nath Khanal, has extended New Year 2083 greetings to all Nepalis and called for moving the country toward socialist transformation.

In his New Year message, Khanal described the year 2082 as a “turbulent year,” stating that the country now stands at the threshold of new challenges and opportunities. He wished all Nepalis, both at home and abroad, a spirit of renewal, unity, prosperity, and good health.

Khanal acknowledged the achievements gained after the People’s Movement of 2062-063 B.S, including the establishment of a republic, the drafting of the constitution, and the formation of a leftist government.

However, he admitted that the expected level of transformation has not been achieved. According to him, successive governments have failed to effectively address people’s basic needs such as employment, education, healthcare, good governance, and security, leading to growing public dissatisfaction.

He pointed out that unemployment, inflation, and corruption have forced a large number of Nepali youths to migrate abroad. He also alleged that both domestic and foreign reactionary forces are trying to exploit public frustration. Furthermore, he stated that recent political developments, movements, and election results have significantly altered the country’s power balance.

Referring to the new government, Khanal criticized the lack of clear policies and plans to solve the people’s fundamental problems. He described elections as merely a “tactical event” and urged not to deviate from the long-term goal of a socialist revolution.

He also emphasized the need for self-review within his own party following electoral defeat, highlighting the importance of ideological clarity, organizational strengthening, and unity among communist forces. He stressed the need to build a broad alliance of patriotic, progressive, and leftist forces to advance toward socialism.

“The only way to solve the fundamental problems of the people is through socialist transformation,” Khanal stated. “The New Year 2083 is demanding this historic responsibility from us.”
