Indra Jatra Begins in Kathmandu, Celebrated with Dance and Chariot Procession for Eight Days

Kathmandu, September 4 — The major Newar festival Indra Jatra has begun today in the Kathmandu Valley. This festival, dedicated to Indra, the god of rain and cooperation, is also known among the Newar community as Yenya Punhi.

The festival officially started at Hanuman Dhoka at 10:31 AM on Saturday, with the erection of the Indradhwaja (Indra flag) along with a ceremonial pole. The festival will continue for eight days, featuring various dances, chariot processions, and worship of deities.

Experts say that performing rituals and displaying power through the worship of the Indradhwaja gives this festival both cultural and religious significance.
