From JSP to Congress and Back: The Rapid Political Shifting of Prakash Prasad Gupta
SARLAHI – Prakash Prasad Gupta, the Ward Chairman of Godaita Municipality-5, recently made headlines for his rapid political shifts. On Magh 14, Gupta left the Janata Samajwadi Party (JSP) to join the Nepali Congress.
However, within 24 hours, he released a video claiming he had returned to his original party and would vote for them, alleging that Congress leaders had "tricked" him into joining under the guise of an event in his honor.
Despite that video, Gupta has recently been seen actively participating in election programs for Gagan Thapa, the Nepali Congress President and candidate for Sarlahi Constituency No. 4. Observers have noted him campaigning alongside Thapa and soliciting votes on his behalf.
When asked about his current stance, Gupta confirmed his support for Thapa, stating, "I am now continuously involved in Gagan Dai’s election campaign." When questioned regarding the Election Code of Conduct, 2082 BS, which prohibits local representatives from participating in election publicity, Gupta claimed he was unaware of the restriction.
The Election Commission recently issued a press release reiterating that, under the current Code of Conduct, public representatives are barred from engaging in election campaigning to ensure a fair and impartial voting process.
