Dr. Sunil Sharma: Our Agenda on Timely Convention Has Been Hijacked
Kathmandu — Nepali Congress leader Dr. Sunil Sharma has said that the Shekhar Koirala group has long been raising the demand that the party’s general convention should be held on time. He also claimed that some colleagues have “hijacked” their agenda.
Speaking to journalists on Monday after a gathering of Dr. Shekhar Koirala’s supporters in Kathmandu, Sharma said that the demand for holding a special convention if the regular general convention cannot take place was originally put forward by the Shekhar Koirala faction. He alleged that their agenda has been taken over by others.
Sharma claimed that the special convention currently underway in Kathmandu will only pass policy-related matters. He also said that Dr. Koirala would become the party president through the regular general convention to be held in Baisakh or Asar. According to him, Koirala is committed to preventing a party split and uniting the party.
“The party is on the verge of a split, and the goal is to ensure it does not break apart. He will take the initiative for unity. The agenda that a special convention should be held if a regular general convention is not possible is ours. It was hijacked in between,” Sharma said.
The special convention, called by Nepali Congress General Secretaries Gagan Thapa and Bishwaprakash Sharma, has been ongoing at Bhrikutimandap since Sunday.
