Dr. Bijay Panta on Hunger Strike Demanding Public Release of Karki Commission Report

KATHMANDU. Dr. Bijay Panta, a former House of Representatives candidate from the Ujyaalo Nepal Party, has begun an indefinite hunger strike at Maitighar Mandala. He is demanding the public release of the Karki Investigation Commission’s report and calling for a more accountable civilian government.

Dr. Panta, who closely observed the past youth movement—specifically the events of the "massacre" on Bhadra 23 and the "destruction" on Bhadra 24—has taken this drastic step against government indifference and the commission's silence.

Having served as a medical volunteer during the protests, Dr. Panta stated that a recent BBC documentary and shared details have raised further questions regarding the gravity of the incidents. He argues that stakeholders cannot remain silent for long regarding the sacrifices of dozens of youth, claiming that no one should use the blood of the youth as fuel to reach the seats of power.

Dr. Panta also alleged that the Karki Commission, which was tasked with separating "truth from lies," has been made helpless under various pretexts. His demands include the immediate public release of the Karki Commission report, a civilian government fully accountable to the people, the establishment of civilian supremacy, and the fulfillment of promises made by the government to the public.

Dr. Panta, who even participated in elections to institutionalize change, stated that conscious citizens are the true opposition to the state and expressed his determination to continue the strike until his demands are met. This hunger strike, aimed at pressuring the release of the report, has once again created a ripple in the political sphere.
