International Day for Biological Diversity Celebrated in Nepal

Kathmandu. Today, the International Day for Biological Diversity is being celebrated in Nepal as well, through various awareness-raising programs.

Celebrated every year on May 22 at the call of the United Nations, the objective of this day is to spread global awareness about the importance of biological diversity in ecological balance, environmental protection, and sustainable development.

On this occasion, various programs are being organized to highlight the importance of the entire ecosystem, along with the conservation of plants, animals, and microorganisms found on land and in water. In Nepal, the Department of Forests, the Department of Plant Resources, and various national and international organizations organize hiking, rallies, seminars, interactions, and awareness campaigns.

Nepal is considered one of the richest countries in the world in terms of biodiversity. Due to the geographical diversity of the mountains, hills, and plains, there is an abundance of rare plants, wildlife, and natural resources here.

This year, the slogan for the International Day for Biological Diversity 2026 is "Local Efforts, Global Impact." This slogan conveys the message that small-scale conservation efforts made at the local level contribute significantly to global environmental protection and the preservation of biodiversity.

Stakeholders have emphasized that everyone's shared participation is necessary in the conservation of biodiversity, spreading the awareness that nature conservation begins right from homes, villages, and communities.
