Criticism of Mahesh Basnet for misinterpreting Balen Shah's use of the word 'Chhaura

CPN-UML Secretary Mahesh Basnet has been accused of making hateful remarks that insult the Madhesi community. Criticism has mounted against him after a video surfaced in which he misinterpreted the word 'Chhaura' used by Balen Shah during a gathering in Janakpurdham.

Last Monday, during a meeting of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) held in Janakpur, senior leader Balen Shah used the Maithili phrase 'Madheshiya Chhaura.'

In the Maithili language, the word 'Chhaura' translates to 'boy' or 'son' in Nepali. However, UML leader Basnet twisted the term to mean 'Chhaura' (whelp), which critics argue implies 'puppy' in Nepali, leading to significant objections.

Opponents in political circles and on social media are protesting this expression, calling it insulting and hateful toward the Madhesi community. Some have even demanded legal action against Basnet.

Former Chairman of the Madhesi Commission, Vijay Datta, wrote an open letter to UML Secretary Basnet on social media, urging him not to attack the linguistic sensitivities of the Madhesi community.

In the letter posted online, he mentioned that such expressions from a responsible leader are unexpected, especially on the eve of an election.
