CPN-UML General Convention: 'Mahakumbha' of Enthusiasm and Unity
Kathmandu. While the second day of the CPN-UML General Convention's closed session is underway at Bhrikutimandap, representatives and cadres from across the country have dubbed this convention a 'Mahakumbha' (great gathering), reflecting the enthusiasm, unity, and hope for the future within the party.
Participants in the convention expressed the view that leadership selection should occur either through fair competition or a consensus. According to them, the General Convention has sent a message that will make the party even more united and powerful.
Ganesh Basnet, former Press Chautari President and a convention delegate, clearly stated that no individual who goes against the interests of Nepali soil and the country can assume the leadership of the UML. Similarly, participant Maya Kuwar, while not a delegate herself, said she attended the convention and expressed her opinion that KP Sharma Oli should be re-elected as the party chairman.
The opinions of delegates from various districts appeared diverse. While some supported the current chairman, KP Sharma Oli, others considered Ishwar Pokharel to be the most suitable leader.
Ramit BK, a journalist and convention participant, noted that the UML has succeeded in bringing all classes together and expressed confidence that the party would increasingly become youth-friendly. He stated that the UML would move forward in a stronger manner.
Kalpana Shrestha, a convention delegate, held the view that even though she did not aspire for a position in the central committee, she would support the incoming leadership. Delegates expressed happiness that the party is moving forward by including youth under 40, Dalits, minorities, and various other classes.
They believe that the party has become even stronger following the Gen-Z movement on Bhadra 23 and 24. Pramod Hamal, Surkhet Chairman, claimed that the narrative suggesting an individual cannot lead just because they have been chairman many times is wrong.
He said that KP Sharma Oli is the only person capable of leading the CPN-UML and taking the party in the right direction. He also requested that Karnali Province be given a Secretary position based on geography.
Surya Upreti, a delegate from Jhapa, expressed confidence that the convention would be completed successfully and relevantly. Likewise, PK Panchkarna Rai, Minister of Social Development for Koshi Province, stated that despite adverse circumstances, the convention is being grandly organized, and the atmosphere is highly encouraging.
Participants conclude that the General Convention has further strengthened the confidence in unity, inclusivity, and robust leadership within the party.
