CPN-UML General Convention: Potential Candidates and Panel Dynamics

Amidst discussions surrounding the CPN-UML's General Convention, the likelihood of the Oli panel repeating its previous office-bearers is rising. However, the panel led by Senior Vice Chairman Ishwor Pokharel appears set to offer a fresh perspective.

While the Ishwor Pokharel group is continuing discussions to finalize its candidate for the General Secretary post, Yogesh Bhattarai was a contender for the position, but he has stated that he will support other leaders for that role. Bhattarai is instead preparing to contest for the post of Deputy General Secretary.

Declaring his intention to run for Deputy General Secretary, he has asked Surendra Pandey and Gokarna Bista to reach an understanding to contest for General Secretary. This raises the question: are there now only two contenders for General Secretary within the Pokharel group—Surendra Pandey and Gokarna Bista?

Gokarna Bista has spoken to Surendra Pandey about reaching an agreement to jointly put forward a single candidate for General Secretary. On the other side, there are two contenders for the General Secretary post from Chairman Oli's side. 

There is speculation that Oli will field one of the two—the current General Secretary Shankar Pokhrel or Deputy General Secretary Pradeep Gyawali—as the General Secretary candidate.
