There is a need to observe Constitution Day under different circumstances.

Kathmandu – Pushpa Kamal Dahal, also known as Prachanda, chairman of the Maoist Centre, has stated that the 11th Constitution Day needs to be observed under different circumstances this year.

Addressing a program on the occasion of Constitution Day on Friday, he noted that since the constitution was drafted in 2072 BS (2015 AD), it has been necessary to observe the day each year according to the prevailing circumstances.

He highlighted that due to political and national conditions, there have been ups and downs requiring Constitution Day to be marked in varied ways. Speaking amidst the new political situation caused by the Gen-Z movement, Prachanda said it was also important to discuss the originality and significance of the day.

He recalled that the journey to drafting the constitution—from holding a Constituent Assembly to finalizing the document—took nearly 70 years. Prachanda further reflected on the days of the People’s War, noting that those who took the oath of “liberation or death” pursued the rebellion with clear objectives and commitments, paving the way for transformative change in the country.

He also mentioned that thousands sacrificed their lives during the People’s War, fighting against despotic and feudal systems as well as foreign interference. As a result, communities that were once oppressed have now gained their rights through the constitution.
