Deputy Speaker Declares Boycott of Dowry Weddings

Sarlahi. Deputy Speaker Rubi Kumari Thakur has announced that she will not participate in wedding ceremonies where dowry is exchanged. She shared this view via the social media platform Facebook, sending a strong message against the dowry system.

While clarifying that she will be unable to attend weddings based on dowry, she urged society to move toward dowry-free, equality-based, and civilized wedding practices.

"It is not just about taking or giving dowry; accepting a marriage based on such a practice, participating in the event, or consuming the feast is also socially unacceptable and legally punishable," she mentioned.

Deputy Speaker Thakur pointed out that the dowry system seriously impacts the dignity, equality, and rights of women, emphasizing that collective initiatives are necessary to end it.

Furthermore, she urged people to include a clear "Dowry-Free Wedding" message on wedding invitation cards and called upon all parties to spread awareness that giving or taking dowry is a social and legal crime.
