Dispute Arises Over Compensation for 61-Year-Old Woman Killed in Sarlahi Road Crash
Sarlahi. While the family of 61-year-old Shanti Devi Thakur, who lost her life in a road accident at Birta Bazaar in Chandranagar Rural Municipality-2, Sarlahi, complains about not receiving compensation, the District Police Office Sarlahi claims the family has not come into contact.
On the morning of kartik 16 at around 10:00 AM, Shanti Devi, the wife of local Shyam Sundar Thakur, was hit by an Indian-numbered motorcycle (BR 30 AP 3037). She was seriously injured by the motorcycle driven by Bishal Mahato of Barkarwa Tol and died that same afternoon while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Birgunj.
Following the accident, driver Mahato was arrested, and a vehicular homicide case was registered against him. However, the Sarlahi District Court released him on Mangsir 12 on a bail of 100,000 rupees, and he was later released on a general date after providing an additional 555,000 rupees in bail from the District Administration Office, Malangwa.
According to the police, the deceased's husband, Shyam Sundar Thakur, has been informed multiple times to proceed with the necessary process to receive medical expenses, funeral costs, and compensation, but he has not yet made contact. Furthermore, the police clarified that the investigation report on the incident was submitted to the District Government Attorney's Office in Malangwa within 22 days.
On the other hand, during a press conference organized on Saturday, the victim's family complained that even after more than two months, they have not received the compensation they are legally entitled to. They alleged that the police played a role in facilitating the case and securing a quick release for the driver, even though he did not possess a driving license. Sanjit Sharma, the son of the deceased, claimed that details ranging from the crime scene report to the documents submitted to the court were altered, and he demanded action against the involved police officers.
Meanwhile, the District Police Office Sarlahi has labeled the news written based on the allegations made by the victims at the press conference as misleading. Additionally, the victim's side has been requested once again to contact the relevant authorities with the necessary documents to move forward with the compensation process.
