Rescue of 51 Nepalis lured to Cambodia by various individuals
Fifty-one Nepalis, who reached Cambodia through various means after being lured by different individuals and were subjected to online fraud in illegally operated online scamming centers and casinos, have been rescued.
Involved in online fraud and other illegal activities while staying in Cambodia without passports, they were rescued today through the initiative of the Nepali Embassy in Thailand and the cooperation of the Cambodian government, and were returned to Nepal with the facilitation of the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA), Cambodia.
Similarly, the embassy stated that efforts are underway to return other Nepalis who are stranded or in difficult situations. The embassy mentioned receiving information that Nepali citizens in Cambodia are being employed in illegal activities including online fraud and are staying without passports or beyond their visa expiration dates.
Nepali citizens staying illegally in Cambodia are requested to contact the Nepali Embassy in Bangkok or representatives of the Non-Resident Nepali Association, Cambodia, for facilitation to return to Nepal.
Complaints have been received that passports of those employed in scamming centers are confiscated by the companies or reported lost during transfers between scamming centers. In such cases, the Nepali Embassy in Bangkok has stated that it issues one-way travel documents free of charge to rescue and return them to Nepal.
According to Cambodia's tourism statistics, the number of Nepalis visiting Cambodia on tourist visas has increased recently, from 101 in 2021 to 1,977 in 2022, 2,940 in 2023, 6,404 in 2024, and 9,676 in 2025.
