Celebration of the 304th Prithvi Jayanti and National Unity Day
Kathmandu - Today, the 304th birth anniversary of the nation-builder Prithvi Narayan Shah is being celebrated through various programs. Born in 1779 BS, Shah's birth anniversary and National Unity Day are being observed across the country today.
Remembering the contribution made by Shah, the leader of the unification campaign of modern Nepal, tributes are being paid by offering garlands at his statue located in front of the west gate of Singha Durbar, the main administrative building. On the occasion of Prithvi Jayanti, the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) has organized a tea reception.
The RPP has invited the Prime Minister, top leaders of various political parties, former Prime Ministers, and various dignitaries to the ceremony. In Gorkha, the birthplace of Shah, this day is celebrated every year with special programs.
The Nepalese Army also honors the nation-builder every year on Prithvi Jayanti by offering garlands at his full-sized statue located within the Army Headquarters premises. Shah, the then King of Gorkha, unified the scattered smaller states with the enthusiastic support and participation of the people despite various social, economic, and geographical challenges.
He passed away in 1831 BS at the age of 52. He ascended the throne at the age of 20 and led the unification campaign by defeating internal and external forces.
This day commemorates our shared history, culture, and pride, inspiring the strengthening of unity amidst diversity and honoring the contributions of ancestors who made great efforts to bind the country together.
It serves as a reminder that prioritizing national interest over personal gain is the foundation for building a strong and inclusive country. This day holds special importance in awakening feelings of dedication, service, and responsibility toward the motherland among the youth.
Because Shah’s unification campaign prepared the foundation for keeping national independence and sovereignty intact, Nepal remains one of the oldest independent nations in the world. The "Divine Counsels" given by Shah during his reign, including statements like "both those who take bribes and those who give them are enemies of the nation," remain equally relevant today in the context of reducing corruption and promoting good governance.
Considering the geographical situation, he described Nepal as "a yam between two boulders." On the occasion of Prithvi Jayanti and National Unity Day, the Vice President, Speaker, leaders of various parties, and other dignitaries of the nation have shared messages of best wishes.
