NTUC Demands Government Action: Ensure Safety of Nepali Workers in Conflict Zones
Kathmandu — The Nepal Trade Union Congress (NTUC) has expressed serious concern over the escalating military tensions and attacks in the Middle East and Gulf regions.
According to a statement issued by General Secretary Ajay Kumar Rai, the entire labor movement is shocked and heartbroken by the tragic death of 29-year-old Diwas Shrestha from Gorkha. Shrestha, who was working as a security guard, was killed during a retaliatory attack by Iran on a U.S. military base in the United Arab Emirates on February 28 (Falgun 17). This escalation followed previous attacks by the United States and Israel.
Stating that it is "extremely tragic and unacceptable" for innocent workers to bear the direct brunt of international power struggles, the Trade Union Congress paid a heartfelt tribute to the late Diwas Shrestha, praying for the eternal peace of his soul and expressing deep condolences to the bereaved family.
According to the Congress, millions of Nepali youths are compelled to seek foreign employment due to a lack of jobs in Nepal, low income, socio-economic pressure, and family responsibilities. They often end up working in high-risk areas with the goal of supporting their families and contributing to the national economy. they have ended up working even in high-risk areas.
However, the Congress stated that it is a matter of grave concern that Nepali workers are forced to work amidst constant fear and insecurity due to recurring wars, political instability, and security uncertainties in Gulf countries.
In this context, the Congress has demanded that the government immediately evaluate the security situation of all Nepali workers in affected areas, arrange for their relocation to safer places if necessary, and facilitate the immediate return of those wishing to come back home.
Furthermore, a strong demand has been made to expedite the repatriation of the remains of deceased workers, provide fair relief and compensation to their families, offer emergency assistance through embassies to workers in crisis zones, and take initiatives to ensure workplace safety through employers.
Highlighting the need to provide legal aid and psychosocial counseling, as well as to ensure the long-term safety of migrant workers, the Congress has drawn the Government of Nepal's attention toward the effective implementation of bilateral labor agreements.
