Two Candidates Announce Candidacy for NRNA Presidency
Kathmandu: Two individuals have announced their candidacy for the position of President of the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA). Dr. Hemraj Sharma and Robin Sherchan have formally declared their intent to contest the upcoming election for the presidency.
Dr. Sharma announced his candidacy during a virtual program on Sunday, presenting a 13-point roadmap for the "rebranding" of the NRNA. He envisions transforming the association into a shared, powerful institution for the Nepali diaspora.
The election for the new leadership of the Non-Resident Nepali Association is scheduled to take place during the 12th General Convention in Kathmandu from March 14 to 16.
During his announcement, Dr. Sharma, a Professor of Physics at the University of Liverpool in the UK, urged voters to consider leadership from a different background than in the past. He committed to rebranding the NRNA with a fresh and innovative perspective if elected through the 12th General Convention.
Active in the association since its inception, Dr. Sharma stated that as a result of the NRNA's campaigns, the Government of Nepal has addressed significant issues such as the Non-Resident Nepali Act, citizenship, investment, and social security for migrant workers.
Meanwhile, Robin Sherchan has established a distinct identity in business and social service, having been based in Japan for the past 38 years. Although he comes from a business background—his late father, Rajendra Sherchan, owned hotel and clothing businesses in Bhairahawa and Kathmandu—he chose to forge his own path rather than relying on ancestral wealth.
Sherchan noted that past knowledge and expert conferences have successfully left a positive impact, and he pledged to continue these efforts physically with more refined and new ideas.
His commitments also include providing policy suggestions to relevant authorities in various sectors of Nepal based on knowledge, skills, and experience gained abroad, and implementing the NRNA Professional and Academic Unit as provided for in the constitution.
