NRNA Vice President Dr. Hemraj Sharma Warns Steering Committee Will Dissolve if February Elections are Not Held
Dr. Hemraj Sharma, the Vice President of the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA), has stated that the organization’s 12th General Convention must take place in the last week of February. Speaking at an event in Malaysia, he warned that if the elections do not happen on time according to the rules, the current Steering Committee will automatically stop existing.
Dr. Sharma confirmed that the elections are scheduled for February 23, 24, and 25 in Kathmandu. He emphasized that there are no other options or excuses to delay this date. He reminded everyone that the two presidents, Dr. Badri KC and Mahesh Shrestha, had previously signed a written agreement to hold the election online. He urged people not to create unnecessary drama and warned that any attempt to block the process would lead to the immediate dissolution of the Steering Committee, as agreed upon by both leaders.
Dr. Sharma demanded that the secret details of the agreement between the presidents be made public. He also stated that the election rules cannot be changed just to satisfy the individual demands of different candidates. He argued that the Steering Committee has the duty to carry out the agreement but does not have the power to create or change the laws of the organization.
As a candidate for the presidency, Dr. Sharma said the NRNA needs big changes in its election system, structure, and vision. He acknowledged that it is difficult to bring people from different backgrounds together, but he believes it is necessary to include everyone despite their differences. He proposed that the upcoming convention should focus on unity and suggested selecting a leadership team through mutual agreement.
He also spoke about improving the voting system so that every member around the world can vote directly online. He expressed concern about how expensive elections have become, mentioning that past candidates spent too much money on things like booking nightclubs. He believes this expensive culture stops capable people from leading. While he thinks the NRNA should have a good relationship with political parties, he insisted that politicians should not interfere in the election process.
Dr. Sharma promised to create an environment where everyone is respected and given equal opportunities. He stated that if there is a clear vision and good ideas, the organization can easily find the resources it needs. He ended by saying he is determined to stop people from using money, power, and politics to take control of the organization.
Other leaders at the event, including Vice President Khagendra Neupane and Regional Coordinator Hari Prasad Bhattarai, also spoke about the importance of staying united and making the upcoming convention a success.
During the program, Vice President Khagendra Neupane spoke about the importance of unity within the organization and moving forward together. The Asia Regional Coordinator, Hari Prasad Bhattarai, asked everyone to join the convention to make the unity process stronger.
Many other community leaders attended the meeting, including Cholakanta Pangeni from the Nepali Janasamparka Samiti, Yogendra Kunwar from the Pravasi Nepali Ekata Samaj, and former NRNA Malaysia President Binod Thapa. Other guests included Padam Limbu from the Janajati Federation, Purna Limbu from PNCC Malaysia, and journalist Ramji Bagale.
The event was addressed by NRNA Malaysia Presidents Rakesh Prasad Mahato and Indra Narayan Limbu, and the program was led by spokesperson Hemraj Sapkota.
