Neurosurgeon Workshop at Nepal Medical College
Kathmandu – A one-day experimental workshop was conducted at Nepal Medical College to enhance the skills of neurosurgeons and nurses working in the operation theater. The workshop was organized to improve the treatment and surgical effectiveness for neurosurgery and spinal patients.
According to Dr. Maya Bhattachan, who is also a neurosurgeon at Nepal Medical College, the workshop involved practicing on anatomy (cadavers) to learn the precautions needed during surgery on a living patient, how to protect nerves, and how to make the surgery more effective.
“Neurosurgeons practice on anatomy from time to time to ensure no mistakes occur during surgery on living patients, which also improves their skills,” said Dr. Bhattachan, one of the coordinators of the workshop.
The workshop was also organized to increase the experience of doctors working at Nepal Medical College. Led by Prof. Dr. Krishna Sharma, head of the neurosurgery department, the workshop included participation from neurosurgeons and nurses from different parts of the country.
The college provided technical support, surgical instruments, and portable X-ray facilities for conducting the workshop. Prof. Dr. Sharma is also the first chairperson of the Spinal Surgery Chapter of the Neurosurgery Society. Although similar workshops have been held elsewhere under his leadership, this was the first time it was organized at Nepal Medical College.
Nepal Medical College plans to conduct such workshops in the future to further enhance the skills and efficiency of neurosurgeons and spinal surgeons. A total of 37 neurosurgeons and nurses participated in the workshop.
The workshop was coordinated by Prof. Dr. Krishna Sharma, Dr. Maya Bhattachan, Dr. Suman Rijal, and Dr. Susan Shrestha. Participants included Dr. Amit Thapa from Kathmandu Medical College, Dr. Samir Acharya from Annapurna Neuro Hospital, Dr. Nilam Khadka from Trauma Center, Dr. Somraj Lamichhane, Dr. Suraj Thulung from Neuro Bansbari, Dr. Balgopal Karmacharya from Manipal Medical College, Pokhara, Dr. Amit Pradhang from Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, and Dr. Prakash Paudel from Nepal Medicity.
