First Double Leg-Amputee to Complete the Seven Summits
Kathmandu: Hari Budha Magar, a former British Gurkha soldier who lost both his legs above the knee, has made history by climbing Mount Vinson in Antarctica. By reaching this peak, he has finished the "Seven Summits" challenge, which means climbing the highest mountain on every continent.
According to his social media, he reached the top of the 4,892-meter mountain on January 6, 2026, at 10:00 PM local time after three days of difficult climbing.
He climbed with a team including Abiral Rai, Mingma Sherpa, and leader Jangbu Sherpa. They faced very cold weather of minus 25 degrees Celsius and strong winds. With this win, Magar is now the first person with double above-knee amputations to finish the Seven Summits. This is a very famous achievement that fewer than 500 people in the world have ever done.
After the climb, Magar said that this journey was about more than just reaching the top. He shared on social media that dreams and hard work can make the impossible happen, and he thanked his family and team.
Magar, who is from Rolpa, lost his legs in 2010 during a blast in Afghanistan. In 2023, he became the first double above-knee amputee to climb Mount Everest. His journey from the Himalayas to Antarctica is a great story of courage and hope for everyone.
