Kathmandu Chapter Condemns Attack on Journalist

Kathmandu: The Kathmandu chapter of the Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) has expressed serious concern over the verbal abuse, indecent behavior, and death threats directed at journalist and publisher of Kirtipur Sandesh Weekly, Nazar Ram Maharjan, by a group of 5–6 people, including Rameshwar Maharjan and Rajendra Maharjan, in response to his news reporting.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the chapter’s secretary, Ramesh Kumar Bohora, said that the incident was not merely a result of personal intolerance or anger but a direct attack on independent journalism. The statement reads, “Such actions constitute a serious infringement on democratic values, press freedom, and the right to expression.”

According to the chapter, journalist Nazar Ram Maharjan, while performing his professional duties, was publicly threatened with death and verbally abused by Rameshwar Maharjan.

The chapter noted that if there is dissatisfaction with any news report, there is a legal provision to file a complaint with the Press Council Nepal. Any unruly, aggressive, or criminal behavior is a blatant violation of the Press Code of Conduct, social etiquette, and prevailing laws.

The statement further reads, “The Kathmandu chapter of the Federation of Nepali Journalists expresses serious concern and strong condemnation of such criminal and inhumane acts. Independent press and fearless journalism are the pillars of a democratic society. Such incidents force journalists to work in an atmosphere of fear, intimidation, and insecurity, and are unacceptable under any circumstances.”

The chapter has strongly urged the concerned security authorities and administration to conduct an impartial and immediate investigation into the incident and take strict legal action against the guilty. It also emphasized that ensuring the safety of journalists is a shared responsibility of the government, relevant authorities, and civil society, and called for a zero-tolerance policy toward harassment, threats, and attacks against journalists.
