Former PM Prachanda Condemns Government’s Decision to Shut Down Social Media

Kathmandu — Former Prime Minister and Chairman of the CPN (Maoist Centre), Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, has strongly criticized the government’s recent decision to shut down social media platforms, calling it unconstitutional, undemocratic, and against the interests of the people.

Through a Facebook post, Dahal accused the government of continuously suppressing criticism by filing cases against opponents, shielding its own, and curbing freedom of expression.

He said the move directly violates the constitutional guarantee of free expression and misinterprets the Supreme Court’s order regarding legal provisions on online publishing and broadcasting.

“The decision not only attacks the freedom of expression ensured by the constitution but also creates difficulties for Nepali migrant workers abroad and their families who rely on social media for communication,” Dahal wrote.

Stating that his party supports regulation rather than control of social media, the Maoist Centre chief condemned the government’s choice to bypass parliament and issue an executive order to shut down platforms.

Calling the step “highly objectionable,” Dahal urged the government to immediately revoke its decision, stressing that protecting constitutional rights, respecting freedom of expression, and safeguarding democratic values are essential.
