Fake WhatsApp Account Used to Scam People in the Name of Kathmandu Deputy Mayor
Kathmandu – It has been reported that scammers are using the name and photo of Kathmandu Metropolitan Deputy Mayor Sunita Dangol to commit fraud via WhatsApp. Creating a fake WhatsApp account, they have been asking for financial assistance, prompting the Deputy Mayor to urge the public to remain cautious.
On Friday morning, Deputy Mayor Dangol shared a screenshot on social media clarifying that the WhatsApp account and the number being used were not hers. The scammers were reportedly sending a QR code for e-Sewa payments, claiming to be in trouble, to solicit money.
She has informed the Nepal Police and telecommunications authorities about the matter, and legal proceedings have been initiated. She urged everyone not to engage in any financial transactions through the fake account.
Deputy Mayor Dangol stated, “I have received information that my name and photo are being misused to demand money from a fake number. This is not me, nor is it my number. Please do not send money or respond to such messages.”
The police have also cautioned the public to be vigilant, as incidents of scams using the names of public officials through digital platforms have been increasing recently.
