Dr. DR Upadhyay: The Creator of 153 Records and Synonym for World Records
Kathmandu. Dr. DR Upadhyay (Khanal), who has been setting extraordinary records in the field of Nepali literature and music, has today become almost synonymous with world records. His creations are not limited only to the hearts of readers and listeners but are also registered in world record books. Dr. Upadhyay has set 153 world records to date. He has received world record certificates from various countries, including the Guinness Book of World Records and record books from America, Australia, and London, UK.
He has also received certificates from Everest World Record, Star World Record, Exclusive World Record, Genius World Record, and British World Record, among others. He mentions that work is currently underway for a new Guinness World Record as well.
Upadhyay is said to be among the top ten creators in the world with the highest number of records. The activity and innovative experimentation he has shown in the creation of songs, music, and literature have raised the prestige of the Nepali language and creativity at the international level.
From Birgunj to the Global Stage
Born in Birgunj, Parsa, in 1962 (2019 B.S.), Dharmaraj Upadhyay is known today as Dr. DR Upadhyay. Having completed his primary education in Birgunj, he came to Kathmandu for higher studies. After completing his Master’s degree in Nepal, he obtained a PhD from India.
He says he has internalized the essence of the Gita: "Perform your duty, do not hope for the fruit." Regarding his PhD not as a final goal but as a tool, he took up the pen with a sense of increased responsibility toward society. Subsequently, he established himself as a lyricist, poet, and novelist.
17 Novels and 37 Albums
To date, 17 novels by Dr. Upadhyay have been published. Works such as 'Bajraghat', 'Tyagi', 'Bhagyachakra', 'Apabitra Chhaya', 'Swarthi', 'Dagabaaj', 'Adhuro Prem', 'Coffee Love', 'Meri Priya', 'Virus Love', 'Majhadhar', and 'Aasakti' are popular among readers. Similarly, 37 of his albums have been released. Albums like 'Pranaya', 'Nashalu Nazar', 'Pratinad', 'Saheli', 'Swargaghar', 'Dharti ra Jeevan', 'Aakanksha', and 'Abhilasha' are famous among listeners and viewers.
A Creator of Unique Records
Upadhyay has conducted various unique experiments while setting records. Creating songs in 50 international languages, a song incorporating the names of currencies from 175 countries, a song including 164 species of birds, songs based on the names of tourist destinations in over 150 countries, the shortest song of 18 letters, and writing, recording, and releasing four songs in a single day—all these are examples of his world records.
Furthermore, activities such as flying songs in a hot air balloon, giving live performances in high Himalayan regions, writing songs for every letter from 'Ka' to 'Gya', and recording songs using the names of 55 different flowers have given him a special identity in world records.
Honors and Honorary Doctorates
He has been awarded various national and international honors for his contribution to taking Nepali songs and music to the international level. Upadhyay, who has received a national decoration from the President, was awarded his ninth honorary doctorate (D.Litt.) by the IIEHSR University in Europe during a ceremony held in Lucknow, India. Prior to this, he had received honorary titles from eight different universities.
A Creator Who Considers Creation as Life
"Writing is my breath; I will continue to create as long as I live," says Upadhyay, who considers writing for society as his responsibility. According to him, the records are not just personal achievements but a campaign to introduce Nepali songs and music to the world.
The friendly and soft-spoken Upadhyay is currently busy preparing for new records. His creations have been placing Nepali literature and music on the world map. It is expected that this tireless traveler of Nepali art and literature will continue to reach new heights in the days to come.
