Dr. Dila Sangroula Pant, leader of the Nepali Congress and head of its Professional and Intellectuals Department, has strongly condemned the police crackdown on peaceful protests by Nepal’s youth, particularly Generation Z, against corruption, malpractice, nepotism, and restrictions on social media.
In a statement released via social media, Dr. Sangroula expressed her heartfelt condolences to those who lost their lives due to police gunfire during the protests. She also wished for the speedy recovery of the injured and demanded that the government bear all medical expenses. “The loss of so much public wealth is tragic and unacceptable,” the statement read.
She pointed out that in places like New Baneshwor in Kathmandu, Damak, and Pokhara, the police used excessive force, constituting a serious violation of human rights. The use of disproportionate force turned a peaceful movement violent, which she described as extremely regrettable. Reports of curfews being imposed across the country and at least 19 deaths have caused deep sorrow for both the Nepali Congress and herself.
Dr. Sangroula demanded that the government immediately halt the crackdown on protesters, ensure proper treatment for the injured, and conduct an impartial investigation into the incidents. “Suppressing the voices of the youth is equivalent to suppressing the future of Nepal,” she emphasized.
Highlighting that the Nepali Congress has lost its moral basis while in government, Dr. Sangroula urged the party to immediately review the situation. “Turning a movement led by youth for ideological awakening, the eradication of corruption, and digital rights into violence is a failure of the government,” she stated in the release.
