260 Prisoners Escape from Bhimphedi Regional Prison in Makwanpur

Hetauda — A total of 260 prisoners escaped from the Bhimphedi Regional Prison in Makwanpur at midnight.

According to prison chief Subas Paudel, at around 12:55 a.m., inmates from Block “A” attempted to break out by smashing through three gates. During the escape, they demolished the western wall of the prison and fled.

Out of the more than 500 inmates in that block, around 230 were recaptured and returned to prison, Paudel informed.

A tense situation persisted for nearly four hours between the security personnel and the prisoners. During the clash, two inmates were injured after being hit by bullets fired by the army. They are currently receiving treatment at Hetauda Hospital. The prison administration stated that the bullets struck them when security forces targeted the tires of a prison vehicle the inmates tried to escape with.

The prisoners also vandalized and set fires within the prison compound. To bring the situation under control, the army fired about 200 rounds into the air, while the Armed Police Force discharged two rounds of warning shots and used tear gas. Meanwhile, the prison’s Block “B” remained secure, according to Paudel.
