Attack on Upendra Mahato is an Attack on All NRNs: President Shrestha
Kathmandu – Mahesh Kumar Shrestha, President of the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA), met with founding president Upendra Mahato.
Mahato’s house had been destroyed during the Gen Zmovement on September 8 and 9. During the meeting on Wednesday, President Shrestha stated that the attack on Mahato was an attack on the entire NRNA community.
Highlighting that attacks were happening from all sides due to weak unity within the NRNA, President Shrestha urged everyone to come together. He said, “The criminal act at your residence was not only a direct attack on you and your family, but also an assault on the honor, security, and hopes of every Nepali living inside and outside the country.”
He noted that the attack deeply hurt the hearts of every NRNA member and emphasized the need to move forward with a strong resolve for unity.
President Shrestha also pointed out that the incident sends a negative message about Nepal’s security situation, which could deter investments, and urged the government to seriously review the matter.
Former NRNA President Dr. Shesh Ghale described the incident as unfortunate and encouraged Mahato not to lose courage. He stressed that institutionally, everyone should work together for Nepal’s economic development, with a focus on NRNA.
Similarly, NRNA activist R.K. Sharma said that a united NRNA would prevent any future attacks on its members. He requested all Nepalis to understand that they are serving the motherland for a few days without expecting anything in return.
Founding President Mahato said he has always invested with the intention of Nepal’s progress and emphasized that lessons must be learned from such incidents. He stated that the attack was motivated by a mentality aimed at weakening the NRNA rather than targeting him personally.
Mahato added that those who damaged his house were not part of the JNG and stressed the need to identify and take action against the culprits. He said, “I was attacked this time; I want to be the first and last—so that no other colleagues face this in the future.”
The meeting was attended by NRNA high-level committee members including Secretary Janaki Gurung, Vice President Khagendra Nyaupane, Women Coordinator Rashmi Thapa, Youth Coordinator Bhimesen Thapa, Research Coordinator Dipesh Khatri, Member Secretary Dharma Raj Giri, Disaster Management Committee members Niranjan Bhandari and Nirajan Khatri, among others.
