Construction of Traditional Ashutosh Mahadev Temple in Rapti

Chitwan – The inauguration and Prana Pratishtha (consecration) ceremony of the Lord Ashutosh Mahadev Temple, built with ancient and archaeological significance, was held with grand devotion on February 15, 2026 (Falgun 3, 2082 BS) on the holy occasion of Mahashivaratri at the Shri Jai Harikirtan Mandap premises in Rapti Municipality-4, Gaindahap. The inauguration and consecration were performed by Swami Gyanananda Saraswati Maharaj, the head of Harihar Ashram, Devghat.

Constructed using traditional materials such as surkhi (brick dust), lime, and wood according to Vastu Shastra principles, the organizing committee stated that this is likely Nepal's first and only unique structure dedicated to Lord Ashutosh Mahadev. The temple's design reflects traditional Nepali style, religious faith, and original woodcraft.

During the ceremony, special religious programs including Maharudra Abhishek, Akhanda Hawan (continuous fire ritual), Veda recitation, Chandi recitation, chanting, lighting of one hundred thousand oil lamps (Lakhbatti), and Bhajan-Kirtan were completed following Vedic rituals with the participation of 121 Brahmins and devotees. The rituals, which began in the morning, continued uninterrupted until evening.

Following the completion of the Prana Pratishtha rituals, the temple has been formally opened to the general public. The program saw a significant presence of thousands of devotees, local residents, and religious followers from various fields.

According to the organizing committee, performing the consecration on the day of Mahashivaratri is considered extremely auspicious from a religious perspective. The ceremony was concluded in a peaceful, well-organized, and joyful atmosphere.

It is believed that the construction of the temple will provide a significant boost to the promotion of religious and cultural tourism in the Rapti region. The organizers expressed expectations that this will expand local religious activities and enhance economic vibrancy.
