Road Safety is Not Just the Police's Responsibility, but Everyone's Shared Duty: IGP Karki

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dan Bahadur Karki has stated that road safety is not solely the responsibility of the police, but a shared duty involving the government, media, private sector, and civil society.

Speaking on Friday at the 14th anniversary program of Metro Traffic FM 95.5 MHz held at the Nepal Police Club in Kathmandu, he praised the station for resuming its broadcasts with renewed energy following its reconstruction, even after its building and resources were turned to ashes during a protest.

He said, "Despite the state where Traffic FM's resources and building were reduced to ashes during the protest, Metro Traffic FM maintained its commitment to the citizens with renewed energy and determination following reconstruction, continuing its broadcasting journey without letting it be interrupted."

IGP Karki emphasized that a mindset treating road safety as solely the police's duty should not take root.

He added, "I want to ensure that a narrative treating road safety as something handled fundamentally only by the police does not develop. In other countries, road safety is everyone's responsibility. It is the same here. When understood as a shared duty among various levels of government, relevant agencies, media disseminating information, the private sector, and civil society, the roads become safe and we all stay safe. Ultimately, that is what we want. To achieve this, continuous mutual cooperation and coordination with stakeholder agencies is essential."
