Rescue Efforts Intensified for Workers Trapped in Chilime Tunnel

Kathmandu: Search and rescue operations for workers trapped in the underground powerhouse of the Chilime Hydropower Center in Rasuwa are progressing rapidly.

Kulman Ghising, Chairman of the Ujyaalo Nepal Party and former Managing Director of Chilime Hydropower Company, is present at the rescue site coordinating and facilitating technical support. According to information he shared via social media, the rescue team is continuously advancing by clearing a large volume of mud, sand, and debris accumulated in the main access tunnel leading to the powerhouse.

When sound signals were sent inward from a narrowed section of the tunnel—about 120 meters deep—an echo was heard, and cool air was also detected blowing from inside. Ghising noted that this has bolstered hopes and expectations that the individuals trapped inside remain safe and sound. According to him, approximately 100 meters remain to reach the powerhouse.

To further speed up the operations, an excavator is rapidly clearing an access path toward the tunnel from the Syaphrubesi side. It is expected that the excavator will reach the tunnel entry by today, after which the deployment of excavators and loaders will significantly accelerate the rescue efforts.

The Nepali Army, Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, an expert rescue team from the Indian Army, local administration, and Chilime staff are working tirelessly around the clock with high morale on this difficult and sensitive operation. Expressing his gratitude to all security forces and technical teams involved, Ghising expressed confidence that everyone inside the tunnel will be rescued safely.
