Defeated by Netherlands by 6 Wickets, Nepal Lags Behind in the Race for Top Four

Nepal's chances of finishing in the top four to directly qualify for the World Cup Qualifiers have further weakened following a 6-wicket defeat against home team Netherlands in the ICC Cricket World Cup League 2. Bowled out for identical scores of 157 runs in two consecutive matches, Nepal appeared ineffective in both the batting and bowling departments.

In the match held on Thursday, Nepal was put into bat first after losing the toss and was bundled out for 157 runs in 44.4 overs. Captain Rohit Kumar Paudel top-scored with 31 runs, while Dipendra Singh Airee contributed 30, Gulsan Jha 20, Karan KC 18, Aasif Sheikh 16, and Sompal Kami 15. However, with no batter able to play a responsible and lengthy inning, Nepal failed to set a competitive total.

Although the Nepalese batters got starts, their inability to convert them into big scores led to a regular fall of wickets, keeping the team under constant pressure. The middle order also failed to deliver as expected, causing the batting lineup to collapse once again.

In response, the Netherlands comfortably chased down the 158-run target in 44.1 overs for the loss of 4 wickets. Dutch captain Scott Edwards played a responsible inning to guide his team to victory. As Nepali bowlers failed to secure early breakthroughs, the Dutch team maintained control over the match throughout. Both spinners and pace bowlers fell short of expectations, accompanied by lapses in fielding.

Earlier on Tuesday, Nepal had suffered a comfortable loss against Namibia after being bowled out for the same score of 157 runs. In that match, Namibia reached the 158-run target in 37.4 overs with the loss of just 2 wickets. Captain Jan Frylinck remained unbeaten on 78 runs, while Michael van Lingen contributed 51.

Due to persistent weak batting performances, Nepal continues to slide down the League 2 points table. With 24 points from 30 matches, Nepal remains in fifth position in the eight-team tournament. Netherlands sits in third place with 34 points from 29 matches. With this loss, Nepal's path to securing a direct spot in the World Cup Qualifiers by staying in the top four has become significantly more difficult.
