Monsoon Arrival Expected to be Delayed in Nepal Due to El Niño Influence
Kathmandu. The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has stated that there is a possibility that the onset of monsoon in Nepal will be delayed by a few more days this year. According to the department, the monsoon, which on average enters Nepal on June 13, has not yet entered this year.
Issuing a press release on Monday, the department stated that based on the analysis of data obtained from satellites and mathematical weather forecasts, the onset of monsoon could be pushed back by a few days. Currently, due to the continuous influence of western and local winds in Nepal, light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunder is occurring, particularly in the mountainous and hilly regions of Koshi, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces.
According to the department, El Niño has already developed in the Pacific Ocean region, and its influence is gradually becoming stronger. Due to El Niño, there is a possibility that the South Asian monsoon system will be affected and the monsoon in Nepal could become weaker. The department has concluded that this is the reason why the arrival of the monsoon could be delayed.
The department stated that in past years as well, the monsoon had entered late due to the influence of El Niño. In the years 1972, 1982, 1983, 1987, 1992, 1997, 2002, 2009, 2016, 2019, and 2023, the monsoon had entered Nepal later than the average date. The department has data showing that the monsoon entered on various dates between June 14 and June 27 in those years.
The Meteorological Forecasting Division stated that it is continuously monitoring this year's monsoon system.
Since updated weather information will be released regularly, the department has urged citizens to pay attention to official weather bulletins and notices.
Along with the possibility of a delayed monsoon, it appears necessary for farmers, water resources, and disaster management agencies to take necessary preparations and precautions. The department stated that it will provide further clear information regarding monsoon activities in the coming days.
