Government is Active in Maintaining Peace and Security: Home Minister

Kathmandu: Home Minister Sudhan Gurung has stated that the government is actively working to maintain peace and security in the country.

Answering questions raised by lawmakers during Thursday's National Assembly meeting, he said that the Ministry of Home Affairs is committed to keeping the nation safe.

Home Minister Gurung emphasized that lawmakers themselves should exercise sensitivity when raising questions about sensitive matters.

"The issues raised by the honorable members are extremely sensitive," he said. "When a family loses a member, does repeatedly bringing it up bring peace to the grieving family?"

He noted that investigations are still ongoing, making it inappropriate to comment on the matter further.

"A detailed investigation is underway on this subject. I request all honorable members of both the House of Representatives and the National Assembly not to repeatedly raise this issue," Gurung stated, adding that lawmakers could also reach out to him individually with questions.

He also declined to comment specifically on the Nirmala Panta case.

In response, Lawmaker Bishnu Bahadur Bishwakarma expressed concern that the Minister's comments felt like an infringement on legislative rights, reminding the assembly that questioning by lawmakers and answering by ministers is a natural part of parliamentary practice.

In a separate context, Home Minister Gurung highlighted the need for coordination among federal, provincial, and local governments regarding mental health.

"Our country has gone through many ups and downs. Therefore, all three levels of government are working together to formulate plans related to mental health. Efforts to prevent suicide are also being carried out through the 1166 helpline," he said.
