English New Year Celebrated with Moderate Activity in Kathmandu
Kathmandu: On the occasion of the English New Year, Kathmandu’s main market areas have seen moderate activity.
According to local traders, although there is slightly more foot traffic compared to previous days, the situation is not extraordinary. Commercial activities in areas such as Indra Chowk, Asan, New Road, and Thamel are generally normal.
As people are mostly engaged in outings and entertainment during the New Year, there is not much crowd for shopping. According to businessman Manoj Chaudhary of Indra Chowk, although the English New Year is not a traditional Nepali festival, Nepalis celebrate it as a fun occasion.
He added that the crowd may increase later in the day. People can be seen taking photos, meeting friends and family, and welcoming the New Year with enthusiasm in various places.
Suraj Tamang, who works at a shoe store, said that unlike the Nepali New Year, the English New Year does not see as much hustle and bustle. He noted that compared to the past two days, there are slightly more people walking around and taking photos and videos.
Similarly, Narayan Humagain, a sari trader, mentioned that the English New Year has not significantly affected business. He said, “From a commercial perspective, the expected crowd in the market is not seen. During the New Year, people focus more on outings and family gatherings than shopping.”
Foreign tourists also appear to be more occupied with hotels, dining, and sightseeing than shopping. Overall, the English New Year in Kathmandu is being celebrated in a cheerful atmosphere with moderate activity and limited commercial engagement.
