UML Leader Basnet Outraged After Youth Wing's Rally Stopped: "This is a Direct Attack on Democracy"

Kathmandu. CPN (UML) leader Mahesh Basnet has called the decision by the Kathmandu District Administration Office (DAO) to stop the Youth Association Nepal's motorcycle rally a "serious attack on democracy."

The DAO Kathmandu refused to approve the motorcycle rally that Youth Association Nepal had planned for tomorrow, Saturday, Ashwin 25 (October 11), stating it did not have approval.

Basnet made his views public through social media, accusing the government of misusing its authority to try and suppress the voice of the people. He stated, "In a democracy, it is not a ban, but a culture of listening to voices that is needed, Government."

He mentioned that the Ministry of Home Affairs' serious attempt to stop a peaceful program by misusing its authority and suppressing the voice of the people is a grave matter.

Basnet termed the restriction placed on the people's right to expression, using past protest incidents as an excuse, a "direct attack on democracy, the rule of law, and people's sovereignty."

Leader Basnet concluded that the government is afraid of the people's voice and stated that the CPN (UML) and the youth organization have taken this matter seriously.

Finally, he warned the government, saying that everyone should be prepared for resistance if necessary in favor of the constitution and democracy.
