Baburam Bhattarai Supports Former Chief Justice Sushila Karki for Interim Government Leadership

Kathmandu – Former Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai has expressed support for former Chief Justice Sushila Karki to lead the interim government.
On Friday, he issued a statement on social media along with Karki’s photo, describing her as a capable and clean personality. Bhattarai emphasized that on the foundation of the current constitution, the President, as the guardian and upholder of the constitution, should administer the oath of office to Karki in order to end the prevailing uncertainty and suspicion.
He stated, “It is very positive and appropriate that the new generation youths aspiring to lead a new Nepal have recommended former Chief Justice and capable, clean personality Sushila Karki to lead the interim government. The entire nation should support and cooperate with her. On our part as well, we extend full support and advance congratulations.
Now, based on the foundation of the current constitution, the President as the constitutional guardian should promptly administer her oath of office to end the existing uncertainty and doubts. What constitutional and democratic procedure would be appropriate should be decided with the advice of constitutional experts and scholars.”
Dr. Bhattarai also remarked that the precedent of appointing Khil Raj Regmi in 2012 (BS 2069) does not apply in the current context. He clarified, “At that time, under the prevailing ‘Interim Constitution of 2006 (BS 2063),’ provisions allowed for certain decisions to be made based on political consensus, which meant the consensus of seven political parties and the CPN (Maoist).
But this is a permanent constitution drafted by an elected Constituent Assembly, and it contains no such provisions.” He further urged Generation-Z to think very sensitively about this matter. “This is the first constitution in Nepal’s history drafted through the Constituent Assembly after a great, sacrificial movement that was even bigger than the current one.
Therefore, moving forward only on the foundation of this constitution will serve the long-term interests of Gen-Z,” Bhattarai concluded.
